Sticking with Your Goals Through Challenges

An individual climbing up a steep mountain.

Let’s be honest: Life is a constant rollercoaster. Rejections, challenges and unexpected changes are bound to occur. These rough patches of time can be especially difficult when you’re trying to accomplish long-term goals. No matter what your intentions are, finding the motivation to continue making progress can be difficult. The temptation to quit altogether may be lurking in the back of your mind, but I’m here to remind you that you can do it! Here are some strategies to assist in sticking with your goals during periods of hardship.

Remember Your Why

During especially hard moments, it’s crucial to remind yourself why you set these goals in the first place. Focusing on the big picture and the reasoning behind your actions will put a purpose to your progress. This especially helps if you feel like you’re getting stuck in the mundane routine of daily tasks. If you don’t resonate with your why — or struggle to come up with one — you may want to reflect and potentially alter your goals to better align with your values and visions.

Focus on Consistency

No one is perfect, and outside circumstances might get in the way from time to time. What matters is that you keep showing up. Motivation will come and go, so you cannot rely on it to give you energy. You just have to be consistent! Recognize that it’s OK to give yourself grace and meet yourself where you are. Even setting aside 10 minutes a day to work toward a goal can lead to significant outcomes over time.

Celebrating Small Wins

Especially with long-term goals, make sure you celebrate milestones along the way. No matter how small or insignificant you may think it is, it’s still an important accomplishment and a part of your journey.

Use Setbacks as Growth Opportunities

Setbacks are bound to happen, and they can be discouraging. Try to use these moments as opportunities for reflection and self-improvement. Reflect on the situation and use what you have learned to refine your strategies moving forward. Try to balance focusing on what you can control without using negative self-talk or blame.

Prioritize Your Well-Being

Lastly, make sure to practice self-care while trying to achieve long-term goals. Seek encouragement from your support system, take frequent breaks and prioritize stress management.

No matter what goals you set for yourself, remember to enjoy the journey. While challenging in the moment, perseverance will make reaching that achievement even more satisfying. Keep showing up for yourself, reflect on past experiences and continue to celebrate your purpose. You’re capable and worthy of achieving success! You got this!
