Hobbies don’t have to be expensive. There are lots of ways to pursue your passions while saving money, and there are many opportunities for free fun.

If you’re into music or going to concerts, join a street team. Radio stations, music venues, and event promotion companies all usually have a street team you can join for free. You’ll be the first to know about new events and can sometimes score free or discounted tickets for helping set up the venue, handing out flyers, or promoting the show in some way. When buying tickets, it’s helpful to know that prices typically increase the day of show. Save yourself some money by buying presale tickets or joining an artist’s fan club for exclusive discounts.

If you enjoy gardening and horticulture, consider joining a community garden group or attend one of their events. Community gardens can be a great resource for seeds and plants, access to tools, and garden tips. Additionally, you could trade plant cuttings with friends to expand your plant collection for free! Most succulents can be propagated from simply removing a leaf and placing it on soil. Once you’ve completed this step, allow the leaf’s end to dry and callous over, then mist with water every few days and you’re on your way to growing a new plant. Similarly, many plant cuttings can easily be propagated in water. After doing some research on the plant you’d like to propagate, gather your supplies. Make a clean cut just below a leaf joint, place the cutting in water, and wait for roots to show.

Pet ownership can be incredibly rewarding, but can sometimes be costly. If you aren’t ready or able to have a pet of your own, consider volunteering at a local animal shelter or wildlife rescue facility. These organizations are always looking for volunteers and you’ll have the opportunity to positively impact animals and humans alike in your community. You could also make some extra cash while getting your creature comfort fix by starting a side gig as a dog walker or pet sitter.

If your passion is food, there are a number of ways to eat well on the cheap. Host a potluck with pals for a friend-filled feast. Everyone can bring a different type of dish, or everyone can bring cohesive ingredients for a killer mashed potato or grilled cheese bar. The possibilities are endless! When dining out, take a moment to check happy hours or daily specials at restaurants and stay up to date on any loyalty programs for further discounts.

Your passions and hobbies don’t have to break the bank. A little creativity and taking advantage of resources in your own community can go a long way, and may even bring new passions and friendships along with it!
