Growth mindset: You’ve likely heard this term used before, especially from professional athletes or highly successful people. So how do we incorporate a growth mindset when it comes to finding success in our own career? It’s achieved by believing in yourself and your abilities while recognizing you can learn, grow, and evolve. Living your life with a growth mindset allows you to build a foundation for yourself based on learning. The more you learn and trust in yourself, the more successful you will be. What are some ways you can adopt a growth mindset to further your career?

Throw Out the Fixed Mindset

Fixed mindsets hold us back. They make us believe we either have it or we don’t. With a fixed mindset, you may not feel in control of your abilities or expertise or understand how to tap into the skills you were born with. You also don’t allow yourself the space or time to change or grow. In the long term, this type of thinking can keep you from overcoming adversities, prevent you from taking risks that could benefit you, limit your abilities to take in necessary feedback, and create a negative mindset leading to poor self-esteem.

Adopt a Growth Mindset

Adopting a growth mindset allows you to believe in the power you have to achieve new successes or skills through learning and practice. Someone with this mindset knows these new areas of expertise take time to achieve — it isn’t an overnight process. They welcome adversity and challenges, knowing they can learn from them. A developed growth mindset allows you to be more adaptable, solution minded, and eager to learn.

Applying Your Mindset in the Workplace

Growth mindsets are important in the workplace and are often demonstrated through thinking beyond the usual and feeling comfortable being more creative. On top of being strategic at finding solutions, people with a growth mindset are more open to change which is inevitable in any career. Applying these skills will allow you to cultivate learning possibilities and see successes and failures as opportunities to grow.
